My humble apologies to all my dearest friends, loyal fans, secret admirers, hard core groupies, faithful followers, tireless devotees, steadfast supporters, ardent enthusiasts, resolute aficionados, unwavering disciples, dedicated subscribers, persistent tag surfers, committed bloggers (I believe I’ve mentioned everyone) and of course all you staunch and unfaltering members of the Jedi order.

Allow me to quell those pesky rumors right away. No! I have not succumbed to the Dark side. My prolonged absence is due to work related activities: fighting crime, battling evil and saving the world from total annihilation kind of stuff. Those in the fold know what I’m talking about…

Okay, enough about my personal life, let’s continue with the project.

From a technical point of view, Image 171 was a reasonably simple image to create. Although as I had stated in my previous posts, all the difficult decisions are made prior to beginning any image; first you have to study the materials at hand and figure out what it is you’re going to do with them and secondly, decide how to manipulate the image with the various approaches and Photoshop techniques available so as to achieve the desired results.

The film trailer required a scene portraying a line of police cars driving off into the torrid afternoon sun. This is where I thought to myself – ‘Self, you’re on your own with this one! The Higher-Self (who, truth be known, is not that much higher than me – only a few centimeters) is pondering the existence of life on Mars and won’t be joining us any time soon.’

Therefore, after an exhaustive solitary search, I unearthed this great sunset image, yet it only depicted a single car and not a police car for that matter.

Even in the absence of my ‘Higher-Self’ my task was self-evident; either I try to paste a bunch of police cars onto the backdrop. Though that would be an effort in itself; to find the appropriate police vehicles with the appropriate angles and lighting conditions and then attempt to merge them into the scene… Not impossible, mind you – just very taxing. Is it worth the effort? Probably not!

So I opted for an alternative approach. I found a set of police car lights and pasted them onto the car. After which, I simply duplicated the vehicle in its natural atmosphere and then enlarged and shrunk the vehicles to the appropriate sizes to allow for perspective distortion, then married the vehicles into the scene with a veil of dust.

There you have it – a line of police cars driving into the scorching afternoon sun.

IMAGE 165

Hey there and welcome to my surreptitious blog post all you secret agents, covert operatives, clandestine enforcers of global stability and instability alike, agents provocateurs, esteemed members of the cloak and dagger brotherhood and stealthy tag surfers.

Our mission today should you chose to accept it, is to infiltrate and scrutinize Image 165.

As the title suggests Naomi’s character is abducted by secret agents – this is the scene I needed to portray.

Fortunately I was able to unearth this great image courtesy of Peter Jackson’s ‘King Kong’ which pretty much encapsulated the require scene.

The only issue was Naomi’s evening dress and that the guys dragging her away were dressed in outdated military uniforms.

My immediate reaction was to replace the uniform with a suit, but then I realized, finding a suit clad individual in a similar pose was a mammoth undertaking even for me. (Not impossible mind you, just difficult) Then again, did I really need to go down that road? Probably not!

I made myself a coffee, sat back and pondered my alternatives – surely there had to be another way… I knew I was going to have to improvise; think laterally. That’s when it occurred to me, all I have to do is simply darken the uniform so it fades from the scene. Taking the focus away from the uniform will naturally accentuate the arms holding Naomi, which was all that was required to fool the eye.

After that I added a few scratches to Naomi’s face for continuity and turned her evening dress into a casual dress by altering the V- neck opening to a more rounded one and then added the necessary dirt and grime. Naomi’s expressive reaction sold the rest…

With the main element completed, I now played around with various forest backdrops. Sizing up 15 or so I finally stopped on this lush verdant setting, as it seemed to work best with the overall composition.

This is the Hummer I chose. I can’t remember why, but here it is.

I literally had to suspend the Hummer amidst the trees as there was no useable road to set it on. I played around a bit, moving it up and down, left to right for maximum recognizable exposure and eventually settled on this position. Incidentally, flipping the Hummer to right helped allude to the presence of a forest road.

I feel the desired effect had been achieved – the Hummer seems to be standing on solid ground.

All in all Image 165 turned out quite realistic and works unbelievably well in the film trailer.

Welcome to my arresting segment all those in cyber servitude, fugitives of principle, prisoners of conscience and ethical incarceration, seekers of liberation, escapees from the mundane, my regular captive audience and anyone hoping for deliverance.

Today we’ll be looking at Image 169.

Image 169 represented one of several key elements in the film’s storyline, so it simply had to be included in the film trailer, yet I had no idea how I was going to produce it?

Like all the images created for the said ‘film trailer’ it needed to depict the essence of the scene. After several futile attempts to somehow construct the desired image, I was practically convinced that it was unachievable and was seriously considering foregoing its inclusion in the film trailer – but then I happened to stumble onto this great shot from ‘The Shawshank Redemption’. This incredible pose immediately bolstered my hopes, stirred my imagination and allowed me to envisage the scene from a whole new prospective.

The only problem with it was the rain; rain in the foreground, rain in the background, rain everywhere. Nevertheless, I was able to clean it up and then tweaked the color to suit.

Once that was done, I had to find the appropriate backdrop. I searched for a while but to no avail. There were plenty of extraordinary sunsets on the net, but I needed something specific. I realized I was going to have to improvise. As soon as I switched my mindset and approach, I found this great photo, which really completed the scene.

Yes I know, it doesn’t look much like a sunset, but like I said, sometimes all it takes is to look at a problem from another angle to find the answer.

So I trimmed the backdrop photo, tweaked the colors, added a few ferns to the foreground and finished the scene with the compelling pose.

The resulting image is a powerful two dimensional representation of the following scene from the script:

The firmament burns red with the fires of atonement. Regaining consciousness, Elias feels his every muscle rebelling as he starts to stir. Grabbing his head he freezes as a sharp stab of migraine-like pain, hits him. Stubbornly refusing to give in he climbs to his knees; the agony registering on his blood-caked face. Touched by the epiphany, Elias raises his glistening eyes to the heavens. Trembling, he succumbs to his emotions.

It’s amazing what one can do if one only frees the mind…

Yee-haw! Welcome y’all to my Photoshop segment, guys and gals, dudes and dudettes.

Today I’m fixin’ to look at Image 100.

Okely dokely folks now I recon y’all have understood what this segment is about, so let’s move on.

Followin’ the film’s storyline, my film trailer now needed a scene showin’ the hero crashin’ out a barn to escape his pursuers.

I is no fool now you hear, but I must admit, I had no idea how I was fixin’ on creatin’ this scene, ifn it was to look realist n’all. So I took me a hiatus and got me into some fine Cajun cooking instead; ya might say I was kinda hopin’ to find me some home-grown inspiration.

Mmmmm! Lawd, O Lawd, I is tellin’ ya straight: that Cajun cookin’ is one sassy kitchen and some mighty powerful stuff – yes Siree!

Anyhow, the weeks dragged out on the bayou, then one day during my regular j-peg huntin’ sessions I happen to stumble upon this great image.

Woo Hoo! Hot diggety dog, praise them ‘Dukes’ and all their wild antics, bless their mischievous, engine revvin’ barn smashin’ lil’ ol’ harts! Don’t it just make ya wanna slap ya knee and break into a dance?

Whoa, easy on the foot-stompin’, hand-clappin’, line-dancin’ boys, I was just fooling wit y’all! Now where was I? Oh yeah! The Dodge Charger (The General Lee) smashing out of the barn, I knew exactly what to do with it the minute I saw it. I done, quick as lightnin’ opened my ‘Defender’ j-peg file and dug around till I found me this here vehicle.

Yes Siree, I recon I had me some work cut out, I was busier than a one-legged man at a butt kickin’ contest! I had to totally remove the Dodge Charger from the scene, then hide the driver of the Defender and the reflection of his kin in the rear window. I then added some blur to the wheels to create a sense of realistic motion. I also added various flying timber boards over yonder for barn crash authenticity.

Like I done told you before, I is the Grand Master and dis picture’s turned a duzzie. Now I is about as happy as a tick on a fat dog.

IMAGE 235

Hey there and welcome to my mission troops.

At ease. Today we’ll be looking at Image 235 – a simple yet fortuitous combination of photos which created a striking scene. Much like Image 164 this one basically came together on its own. Though I must admit, both of these photos were part of my collection for quite some time before the visual connection was made. One day I was browsing through my Defender folder and my eye happened to pause on this incredible perspective.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d seen this image in my Defender folder a hundred times before; the thing is I never really knew what to do with it. However, this time the finished result flashed before my eyes. I immediately opened my Blackhawk folder and plucked out this one.

Much like the Defender, I had also seen this image many times, but I guess some time had to elapse before my subconscious mind was able to piece together and perceive the two images as one.

Having two perfectly matched images, the rest was fairly simple. Although I did have to remove the roof-rack and other minor details from the Defender and add some dust and a slight blur to the tires to create a sense of motion.

Don’t you just love the powerful viewpoint?

Welcome to my workshop Dear Friends! Yes I call you ‘Friends’ because I feel your ‘Love’ emanating from my screen. Love, Peace, and Power to the People… Right on my brothers, right on! Yeah! Let the healing begin.

Okay let’s continue, today we’ll be looking at Image 143. This image was part of one of the chase sequences where the hero flees off-road in his Defender to escape his pursuers.

I was instantly hooked when I found this great photo of a 4×4 nose-diving into a mud pool.

It would have been perfect had it been a Landrover Defender, but as you can see it’s a Toyota Landcruiser.

I guess what followed was the most difficult stage, the solitary site scanning, scalp scratching, square-eyed search.

Yes, it took me a while but I eventually found this Defender – an absolutely rare angle, a bird’s-eye view (so a special thanks to the owner for publishing it) fortunately for me it was the right color, well almost…

I love the way the image turned out, the original Toyota bull-bar worked well to realistically merge the Defender into the scene.

Welcome back to my film project, friends, colleagues, tag surfers, Denzel Washington and Tony Scott fans and anyone who’s seen the film Deja vu.      Hey, even if you haven’t seen Deja vu, but are having one right now, come on in anyway we’ve got heaps of room for everyone.

Pour yourself a coffee, grab some cookies and let’s get started. Image 164 was an easy scene to do in comparison to some of the previous ones; you can say it almost came together on its own. What I needed to show was Denzel exiting a hummer – pistol in hand. I immediately thought, how easy could this be? Grab a picture of Denzel, a picture of a hummer; slap them all together and Bam! Scene finished. You have no idea how wrong I was… When I Googled, ‘Denzel Washington’ images, look what popped up; a scene from Tony Scott’s film – Deja vu.

What can I say, the scene was almost complete, but for one small detail – it’s called continuity folks. Can anyone guess what it was? Exactly! The wrong type of pistol. Denzel was holding a revolver but needed to be holding a 9mm. automatic.

Have you ever had one of those days, where everything you did just fell into place? You know, when you thought to yourself – “Doh! Why didn’t I fill in that lottery ticket?” I realized this was going to be ‘one of those days’, I opened up the file/folder containing all my pistol images and there it was; as it turned out – a perfect match. Like shooting fish in a barrel!

What I needed now was to replace the weapon in Denzel’s hand and lose some of the equipment on his vest. This was simple enough because the background allowed for any sort of manipulation.

Tada! It worked like magic. Easier than this, would have only been if I had my cape, hat and wand and my trusty white rabbit.
